Generate a transaction code with your Mobile Banking PIN or physical Secure Key
When you're using online banking to send money to a new payee, we'll ask you to authorise the transaction by generating a one-time transaction code on your mobile banking app or physical Secure Key. Here's how to do it.
Using a Mobile Banking PIN
1. Select 'Generate security code'
Open the app, but don't log on. Select 'Generate security code' at the bottom of the screen.
2. Select code type
Select 'Transaction security code' from the list.
3. Enter payment details
Enter the last 4 digits of the account number you're sending money to, along with the full payment amount, including pence. For example, if you were paying £152.00 to account number 400500 12345678, you would enter 567815200.
4. Enter transaction code
A 6-digit code will be generated. Enter this into the 'Security code' box in online banking and select 'Continue' to complete the payment.
Using a physical Secure Key
1. Enter your PIN
Press and hold the round, green button (bottom right) to switch on, then enter your PIN.
2. Enter last 4 digits of account or card number
When the screen shows 'HSBC', press the square, yellow button (bottom left). Then enter the last 4 digits of the account number, company reference or credit card number, ignoring any letters or special characters.
3. Enter amount
Enter the payment amount including pence, ignoring the decimal point. Note: If you input more than 8 numbers they will start dropping off the end of the display, but don't worry, they've been registered.
4. Generate your code
Press the square, yellow button again to generate your transaction code.
5. Enter code
Enter the 6-digit transaction code in online banking and select 'Continue' to complete your payment.
Other types of payment

To make a CHAPS payment in branch, you'll need to bring valid ID and the details of the person you want to pay. You can make the payment with telephone banking using your Telephone Security Number or Voice ID.
